How to Repair Roof Vents

Your attic space holds a lot of heat. In the hotter months, the space between your roof and your ceiling can cause a lot of stress on your air conditioning system. While a handy individual can install or repair a roof vent, some people prefer to hire professionals. Tornado Roofing has years of expertise in a variety of roofing repairs.

How Does a Roof Vent Work?

When your crawl space doesn’t have enough airflow, it can trap air and moisture. Inadequate insulation can also encourage decay, mildew, and pests. An air vent in your roof provides airflow and cooling. Combined with quality insulation, air vents can significantly reduce your heating and cooling bills.

What are Plumbing Vent Pipes

Along with the roof vents you may also find that your home likely has a plumbing vent pipe. Similar to the plumbing pipes that move water in and waste out of your home, the plumbing vent runs through your home and out through your roof. The plumbing vent pipe helps to regulate the air pressure in your plumbing, and prevent clogs.

Roof Vent Damage: Bigger Problems

When a roof vent gets damaged, it can lead to costly repairs. Leaking vents can rot the roof from the inside, and create a dangerous environment for you and your family. If the damage isn’t repaired, it can create irreparable damage. Water is the enemy of building structures. Most building materials aren’t meant to be exposed to standing water. Further, moisture breeds mold, and mildew.

Repairing a vent can seem expensive, but letting the damage spread could lead to a full roof replacement. Replacing a roof vent on your own can range from $10-100. While hiring a professional contractor to complete the repair can cost between $300-500. Replacing your roof can cost upwards of $20,000.

When you resell your home, the vents are one of the things that an inspector will use to judge the health of the roof. Flaking shingles, rusted flanges, curved edges, or other apparent damage will be a red flag to any inspector looking at your home when you try to sell it. An inspector will crawl up into the crawl space and inspect the trusses and other structural components for water damage, pests, and mold caused by excess moisture.

The Importance of Roof Vents in Southeastern Florida

Florida comes with its fair share of wild weather events, and unexpected adversities for homeowners. Between tropical storms and sweltering temperatures, Florida is known for its crazy weather. Tornado Roofing has been working in the Florida area long enough to have seen it all.

The humidity of a Florida summer can be miserable at the best of times. It’s even worse when you’re storing the heat of an oven in your attic. The temperatures in an unvented attic space can easily exceed the 100ºF mark. Add humidity and your air conditioner doesn’t stand a chance. Energystar rated homes with proper roof vents are significantly more efficient than those without them.

Roof Vents

Temporary Fixes

Slapping a bandaid on a major repair like a roof vent is temporary. While wrapping a towel around the leak, or putting tape around the weak point may seem to stretch the life of the vent a bit longer, avoiding the repair doesn’t make the damage go away.

If you can replace just the broken parts, you can avoid spending more than necessary on your roof vents. Replacing them when they become damaged will increase the overall longevity of your roof.

Whatever short term solution you choose, use the time bought by the temporary repair to plan out your permanent solution. If that means taking a weekend to repair the roof vent, most home repair stores have the necessary parts. If you choose to hire a professional, make sure they’ve got the experience and expertise to back up their work.

Steps for Doing It Yourself

For one who considers themselves handy, a roof vent repair is a fairly basic task. With the right tools and an afternoon to work on the project, you’ll find that replacing leaky vents isn’t a difficult task.

For an Angled or Pitched Roof:

  • Identify the cause of the leak. Knowing the anatomy of a roof vent will help you understand the points that could be leaking. Most often, it’s damage to the pipe or the metal flanging under the roofing materials.
  • Remove the shingles or tiling around the vent. Carefully pry the roofing material around the vent pipe away from the area. Mind the structure and waterproofing on the underlayer.
  • Carefully remove the flashing. Slide the edge of a pry bar under the flashing, and use a piece of scrap wood to lever the flashing away from the roof.
  • Slide the flashing off. Be careful not to knock the pipe out of place, or to damage the space around the pipe. Remove nails from the flashing, and fill holes with roofing cement. Secure the new flashing with roofing nails and add roofing cement to seal.
  • Re-install the shingles over the new flashing. Using roofing nails, and starting in the bottom row, layer the shingles to match the surrounding roofing. Seal the original nail holes with roofing cement.

For a Flat Roof:

  • Clear a 4 foot square of space away from the vent. Then, clean all gravel and other debris clear of the area you’ll be working on.
  • Find the edge of the flashing, and cut around it, through the roofing felt. Using a pry bar and scrap wood, carefully pry it away from the roof.
  • Lift the flashing off of the vent pipe, and inspect the pipe for damage. Careful not to knock the pipe out of place.
  • Position the new flashing on the pipe and mark the footprint it leaves. Use this marking to cut away the roofing felt around the pipe.
  • Cut a patch to match the space removed. Create a layer of 15 lbs roofing felt for each segment of roofing you can see in the hole. Mark a hole for the vent pipe, and cut it from the roofing, felt layers so that they will fit snugly over the pipe. By alternating roofing cement and felt, fill the hole around the vent until the top layer of felt is even with the roofing material.
  • Carefully position new flashing on the vent pipe, and line it up with the patched hole the way the previous flashing was. Use roofing nails to secure the new flashing and seal with roofing cement. Using pliers, fold the vent pipe edging over to lock the flashing in place.
  • Create another layer of roofing felt that is 3 inches larger than the hole, and a 2nd that is 6 inches larger. Layer them with the roofing cement to seal the new patched roof vent.
  • If you swept gravel off the space in step 1, use it to cover the bare spot. Otherwise, you’re done. Carefully climb down and appreciate your hard work.

What are Soffits and Fascia Boards? Why are They Important?

Around the world, roofs come in all shapes and sizes. Roofs are not just wood and asphalt shingles. Rather, they are a multi-faceted and multi-layered system that protects your home or place of business from a number of dangers, such as infestations, severe weather, and extreme heat or cold. If you understand all the parts of your roof, it’ll be a lot easier to explain your problems or concerns with a roofing professional when you make the call for an inspection, fascia board repair, or a routine maintenance. So, what are soffits and fascia boards? Why are they important? Read on to find out more and see if repairing your fascia boards is a good idea.

Call Us Now!

What are Fascias?

Fascia boards are the very long, straight boards that line the lower edge of a roof. It’s the point where the board meets the edge of the pitch on the roofline. These boards are attached to the bottom ends of roof trusses and essentially protect the space between the roof and the outdoors. The issue with fascia boards is that they can be damaged quite easily if they are exposed to flying debris such as a tree limb or hail. They are also prone to wood rot if the gutters are not functioning properly.

Fascias have a lot of work to do. They can support a lower edge of the bottom row of roofing tiles, and they also have the task of carrying all the guttering. Fascias must be built well because they help stabilize and direct gutters. You can imagine how much force these boards have to withstand during the severity of a storm! Fascia boards need to be strong because they must be able to withstand many pounds of force and several gallons of water per second.

While fascias are found in all modern home designs, older homes from the Victorian or Colonial eras will instead have a more ornate roof overhang. Back in the day, the belief was that a large enough roof overhang would prevent rain from getting back into the house. This was proven wrong time and time again, which is why fascia boards and soffits were invented.

soffit installation

The issue with damaged or rotted fascia boards is that it can be difficult to tell if the wood underneath is rotted unless you remove the guttering. A rotted fascia board will not be able to support a gutter that is weighed down by heavy rains or compacted snow. If enough snow accumulates, it could cause a critical failure in the fascia boards, which would end up causing a lot of damage.

Fascia boards are also very visible, which is why you always want them to be in tip-top condition. Attractive and stable fascia boards will add a large amount of curb appeal while also protecting your home from the outside elements.

Aluminum fascia is the aluminum board that runs over the subfascia (the wood). This will help make the home exterior look great while also protecting your home and the underside of your roof. To sum up, here are just a few of the reasons why having properly installed fascia boards is important for your roof:

  • No fascia boards and open rafters allow critters and insects easy access into your home
  • An open rafter screwed into the end grain is not nearly as strong as a rafter being screwed into the perpendicular end of a horizontally running fascia board
  • Gutters (and the weight of running water or snow) are supported by the fascia boards. Weak fascia boards could spell disaster for your gutters
  • Fascia provides the opportunity for a soffit to close off the attic space

What Are Soffit Boards?

Soffit boards, or a soffit, is the layer of aluminum, vinyl, or wood panelling that secures the space between the top piece of the wall board to the bottom of the fascia board. Soffit boards are crucial because they allow a healthy amount of air circulation in your attic. It’s just one of the many roof ventilation systems that go towards equalizing the interior temperature of your home.

A steady airflow needs to be achieved in a roof to maintain temperature and minimize water damage, and the sofft is one of the most important aspects of this ventilation. Not only will soffit allow cool air to come in, it will also warm air to escape.

Since soffits are vented, it’ll keep the home cooler during the warmer months and prevent a buildup of ice during the winter months. Soffits will also prevent water from accumulating underneath the roof overhang.

Tips For Soffits and Fascia

There are a number of things that you can do to make sure your fascia and soffits are working properly. As always, we recommend that you get a professional opinion on every part of your roof at least once a year with a professional roofing inspection.

Soffits are a prime space for hornet, wasp, or bee nests. Periodically check for miniature nest formations and use insect killer to take care of the issue. If you’re not comfortable with tackling this on your own, definitely call an exterminator to have the problem taken care of before it grows any larger.

If you find mold or mildew running along your soffits, use a broom or a soft brush doused with bleach and water to mop up the mess. After that, you should schedule a call with a roofing professional to check the underside of your roof for possible water damage and weak points.

We say this a lot, but preventative maintenance is the name of the game when it comes to roofs. Being preemptive about your roofing issues and repairs costs next to nothing when you compare it to a large water-damage repair bill.

Call Us Now!

Always make sure your gutters are free of any contaminants and debris. Lots of leaves, dirt, or other debris may find its way into the gutters over time. If you neglect to clean your gutters, the water may start to back up. And when that happens, the first place it tends to go is the fascia boards.

When you schedule a routine roofing inspection, make sure to let the roofing professional know that you want a thorough inspection of the flashing around the soffits and fascia boards, as well as the gutters. There are correct and incorrect ways to install fascia and soffit, so make sure that the roof inspector lets you know that your roof is properly waterproofed.

What Are the Best Roof Shingles For Florida Homes?

If you own a house in Florida, you’ve probably wondered what the best roof shingles for your home would be.

Florida can have crazy weather: wet and full of hurricanes one season, then scorching hot and incredibly humid the next! With all the extreme changes in weather, it’s no wonder that roof repair and residential roof shingle replacement are such common occurrences in South Florida.

Call Us Now!

Best Shingles for Florida Roofs

For the best roof shingles in Florida, we’ve written a brief FAQ on asphalt shingles that will help you and the rest of our clients fully understand their best options.

What are the benefits of choosing asphalt shingles?

The benefits of asphalt shingles are numerous! They are a great choice for Florida roofs and are one of the best roof shingles because they exhibit safety, versatility, and a wide variety of designs:

Asphalt shingles can achieve the highest fire rating (Class A) possible with the addition of a fiberglass mat.

Asphalt shingle roofing offers a large degree of soundproofing when compared to other materials (according to a study performed by The Acoustic Group).

Asphalt roofing shingles are manufactured to meet stringent impact-resistant Class 4 impact codes and can also be rated for ASTM D7158 Class H and Class F wind ratings, which include 110mph to 130mph.

Asphalt shingles provide excellent cost-effectiveness and are suitable for a wide variety of roofs.

Asphalt shingles are surprisingly customizable, incredibly versatile, and offer a wide array of stunning color palettes.

2. How long do asphalt roofs last?

While asphalt shingles sold in previous decades did not last very long, today’s premium asphalt shingles have a general lifespan of about 30 years. Obviously, this will depend on the amount of extreme weather your roof is hit by, but 30 years is a good rule of thumb (pending something catastrophic). Wood roofs tend to last the same amount of time, but cost 6x more than that.

3. How long can you expect a shingle roof to last in Florida?

This depends on how hard your roof is hit by inclement weather. It also depends on how old your roof is when it gets hit by a strong storm. For example, 30% to 50% of roofs require reroofing if they are hit by a storm over 120mph. This dramatically reduces the statewide average, which is about 12 years for 3-tab asphalt shingles and 15-20 years for better-quality and more-expensive architectural shingles.

4. When should an asphalt roof be replaced?

Check your attic. If you are seeing beams of light come through the roof (very bad) or stains and streaks (not as bad), it may be time for a new roof. Or at least a roof repair.

Check the home repair records. Hopefully, the previous owners know when the roof was replaced if you do not. If it’s been over 15 years, make sure to get an expert out there.

Check the shingles. It’s not too hard to do. If your shingles are cracked, damaged, or buckling, you’ll need to repair this, as broken shingles can lead to leaks, mold, and structural damage.

If your roof is sagging, your roof is rotting.

Is your roof a breeding ground for moss?

3-tab asphalt shingles are a great choice for Florida Roofs because they are cost-effective, they provide adequate protection, and they are very customizable. However, 3-tab asphalt shingles have been on a slight decline in the market due to architectural shingles.

Architectural Shingles for Roofs in Florida

Architectural shingles, otherwise known as laminate shingles or dimensional shingles, differ from the look of the traditional 3-tab asphalt shingle. Architectural shingles consist of various shapes and sizes to give them a more layered (dimensional) look. While they are more expensive than regular 3-tab asphalt shingles, they provide a greater degree of protection.

Since they have more of a dimensional look, architectural shingles look more like wood shake. They also weigh more than traditional shingles. Because of this weight, they provide greater protection (they weigh almost 50% more!). They almost always have a minimum 30-year guarantee and are rated to resist higher rates of wind than 3-tab traditional asphalt shingles.

Architectural shingles will also raise the value of any home and are becoming more and more popular in today’s market. We suggest architectural shingles for people who are looking to get the most out of their residential roof in South Florida.

Wood Shake Roof Shingles

wood shake shingles

Wood shake roofs look like wooden shingle roofs, except they are hand-split with power tools. This gives them an uneven, hand-made appearance that can be absolutely stunning. The issue with wood shake roofs is that they often cost 5-6 times more than traditional 3-tab asphalt shingle roofs. Wood shake roofs are very popular in areas such as Naples.

Wood shake roofs can work for certain areas, especially coastal living. Cedar shake is known to weather saltwater and salt air very well. A thick, textured appearance provides many ridges, grooves, and varying grain patterns to give the roof a rugged appearance. Shingles are much more uniform, flat, and smooth in appearance. Due to the risk of fire, many communities and building codes outright prohibit the use of wood shake and wood shingle roofs.

While wood shake looks beautiful, it also costs a lot to maintain. Pre-treating for burn resistance, insect infestation, and general upkeep will cost much more than 3-tab asphalt shingle maintenance or dimensional shingle maintenance. Shake is more expensive than regular wooden shingles because much more material is used for the wooden shake.

Metal Roof Replacements

Aluminum, zinc, and galvalume, and galvanized steel are popular choices for those looking for metal roofing options. Metal roofing can even be coated to look like real clay or asphalt tiles, without the same amount of upkeep or price.

For a seaside living, they offer great corrosion resistance, but often don’t fit in with the traditional look that many seaside homeowners are going for. Metal roofing can be rated between 110mph to 160mph and can last a very long time. Metal roofs can last 50 years or more, so it’s no wonder that metal roofs are becoming more and more popular with more houses that boast a modern, minimalistic design.

Slate Shingles Roof

Natural slate shingles can be very heavy, very costly, and very hard to install. However, they offer tremendous protection against rain, wind, and extreme weather. Slate roofing looks wonderful, with the average life expectancy nearly twice of regular 3-tab asphalt shingles. This gorgeous roofing material is available in a variety of colors and has been held in high regard by architects for centuries.

The main issue is that the slate is cost-prohibitive and incredibly heavy. For example, 100 square feet of asphalt shingles will weigh around 250 pounds. 100 square feet of slate roofing, on the other hand, can weigh between 800-1000 pounds.

What Are The Best Shingles for Florida Roofs

The answer to this question comes down to your preference and your budget. Nearly 75% of all roofs in Florida are made out of asphalt due to their durability, style, and cost-effectiveness. If money is not a huge concern of yours, slate roofing and dimensional roofing are fantastic choices. Metal roofing also boasts a large degree of durability and wind-resistance, but many homeowners prefer a classic-looking roof. Wood shake offers more protection than wooden shingles, but they are also prohibited in many communities due to fire hazards. Always remember to check your local building permits to make sure your roofing plans are good to go!

Roofing Ventilation 101

How do you calculate and plan roofing ventilation 101 and why is this necessary? Well, there are actually quite a lot of benefits when your roof has sufficient ventilation. First and foremost, proper roofing ventilation will increase your roof’s lifespan. Blistered shingles, Ice dams, and frost in the attic are sure signs that your home is suffering from poor ventilation. In fact, proper ventilation can save you thousands of dollars on roof repairs!

Poor ventilation can cause damming (where ice builds up on your roof). This can create significant damage to your roof and decrease its lifespan. Ice damming is a result of heat in your attic combined with the sun’s heat, which causes snow to melt on your roof. When the melted water gets to the edge of the roof there will be a possibility that the roof will refreeze.  This can compromise not only your roofing system, but the whole structural integrity of your attic. With proper ventilation, hot air will be effectively removed from your attic so that it doesn’t melt the snow on your roof.

Call Us Now!

Another benefit of good roofing ventilation is that it helps lower energy costs. When the outside temperature rises, people go indoors to keep themselves cool. When your roof is properly vented, it will allow heat to dissipate. This means your AC’s workload will be reduced… resulting in a lower power bill.

Types of Ventilation

There is a wide range of ventilation systems; however, there are only two main methods of ventilation: mechanical and natural ventilation. Natural ventilation uses wind to push the rising hot air out of a vent as exhaust.

Regional factors like climate, house style, and code requirements vary from city to city. Each system is specially designed to take all that into consideration.

There are several types of vents. We’ll help you choose one that best fits your local climate and local codes. Exhaust vents enable hot air, or exhaust, to escape. A type of exhaust vent called a ridge vent, which is fastened onto the point where two separate roof sections meet, does quite a few things for the roof. The ridge vents are fastened underneath the shingles so that the ventilation does not

interrupt the aesthetic of the roof design, while properly maintaining the interior temperature of the building.

Intake vents are installed at the eaves, drip edge, or under the shingles. They cooperate with ridge vents to let cool air enter the attic and force hot air to escape through the ridge vents.

roof ventilation

Sometimes a combination of vents should be used and high and low vents should be installed for proper ventilation. High vents act like exhaust vents while low vents should act like intake vents, but it depends on the winds from the particular climate.

Crooked turbine vents are the ventilation systems that spin from the wind. They have to be installed perfectly level in order to properly function with the wind. These vents do a good job of pulling the hot air from inside of the whole house as long as the attic is sealed properly.

How do you calculate roof ventilation?

Step 1 – Use a tape measure to calculate the dimensions of the attic. If your attic spans the entire area of your house then it will be easier for you to measure the outside of your house. Let’s assume that your attic floor has an area of 1200 sq ft (30×40 ft).

Step 2 – In order to find the appropriate venting needs of your attic, you’ll need to divide 1200 (floor area) by 150. The answer will give you your roof’s venting needs.

Step 3 – Your next step is to measure your roof ridge’s length. Multiply the length by 18 square inches. The answer is the amount of venting for a ridge provider per linear foot.

Step 4 – Calculate the dimensions of the soffit vents and then measure their areas. Make sure you have sufficient numbers in order to have extra venting for your attic. You can usually find the square footage of a soffit vent on the label.

For example, if you use a 6×12 rectangular vent then it means you’ll need 10 of those since each one has around ½ square foot and you have to match it with the ridge vents.

Step 5 — Next, use a ruler and marking pencil to measure and mark those dimensions out onto the roof.

Step 6 — Use a jigsaw or reciprocating saw to cut along your measurements. Make sure to cut through shingles and wood underneath.

Step 7 Next, use a pry bar to loosen shingles and remove the section.

Step 8 Apply a thick layer of caulk to the flange of the vent (the bottom)

Step 9 After that, slide the vent into the surrounding shingles. The bottom part of the vent should be left exposed. Rest it on the shingles below.

Step 10 — Hammer in nails every few inches to make sure the vent is secure

Step 11 — make sure there are no loose shingles around the vent. If there are, hammer them down with some nails.

Roof Maintenance

Roof ventilation systems should be cleaned every few years or annually if the climate is severe. Blasting the vent with compressed air is the best way to remove dirt, dust, and loose insulation.

Ventilation is paramount to the overall health of your home. Not cleaning vents is equivalent to not even having them in the first palace. Prevent moisture buildup, cooling costs, the lifespan of the roof, and potential damage by cleaning the vents. This cleaning method depends on your access to an air compressor and the access of the vents, they may be too high to reach from the attic. An alternative method is pressurized water pressure. Another less effective method is a broom.

Sometimes You Just Need to Vent

If you have to install a venting system on your roof, whether it is a new build, renovation, or a system replacement, you should let professionals take care of the installation. Roofing work is one of the most dangerous jobs, and a lack of experience makes the job even harder to do yourself. Additionally there are so many technicalities involved with the installation of the proper ventilation system. Cleaning the systems can be just as difficult and technical as installation, which is why it is better to hire a professional for this service as well.

Professionals at Tornado Roofing Co in South Florida have in-depth knowledge and experience in roof ventilation calculation, installation, and maintaining. We are the best roofing company in Southwest Florida. We have over 20 years of experience, a great reputation, and raving reviews.

Repairing Your Fascia Boards

Repairing Your Fascia Boards

A fascia board is a long, straight board that runs horizontally under the lower edge of the roof.  Fascias are composed of plastic or wooden boards. Its function is to hold the guttering, support the lower part of the bottom row of tiles and distribute the weight of the roof evenly.  They also cover fittings to protect them from water. This functional roof piece is highly customizable so that you can match the aesthetic of the building.

Call Us Now!

It is of utmost importance to keep the structural integrity of your home stable — especially with all the harsh weather factors that come with living in the Florida climate.  Storms, hurricane winds, and harsh debris will surely test your home and especially the integrity of your roof. Damage to even the strongest of fascias is inevitable, natural wear and tear occurs.  Fascia boards are prone to rotting, especially if they are exposed to frequent rainfall. The good news is that repair is not troublesome.

roofing in South Florida

Repairing Fascia Boards

If the fascia is rotted, you could repair the wood with polyester filler in the form of a wood hardener and filler.  You would just need to remove all of the rotted wood with a sharp tool. After removal, coat the area with wood hardener and finish off with wood filler and press into area with a putty knife.  However, this fix is only a temporary fix for fascias that are mildly rotted.

In most cases, the fascia needs to be replaced.  An overview of this project is quite simple — all you need to do is remove the damaged fascia board, install a new board, seal the seams, and finish with a coat of paint.

Tools Needed:

  • Replacement Fascia Board
  • Work Gloves
  • Ladder
  • Electric Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • Circular/Miter Saw
  • Safety Glasses
  • 2 inch nails
  • Bonding body filler putty
  • Putty knife
  • Outdoor primer
  • Paint that matches the house or building
  • Paintbrush
  • Foam Roller

Step 1: Gutter Removal

To remove the rotted or damaged fascia board that you are replacing, you must first remove the gutters from behind that fascia.  Unscrew the gutters with an electric screwdriver. Remove the gutter from the gutter brackets underneath the gutter and under the fascia.  Set the gutter aside. Don’t forget to remove the gutter brackets attached to the old fascia so that you can attach them to the new fascia.  Be careful to not damage the gutters upon removal.

Step 2: Make Cuts in the Board

Next, you want to make cuts in the old fascia board so that it is easier to remove.  Make cuts every 3 feet by first measuring and marking cuts. Make vertical cuts in between the roof rafters, carefully making sure not to cut the rafters.  It is safer and easier to remove the fascia in pieces. To remove each piece after the cuts have been made, use a hammer to gently knock the fascia board piece to loosen the nails. The force from the hammer should be going away from your home.  It will either fall or you will have to gently pull it out. Be sure to stabilize yourself.

metal roofing hotel

Step 3: Cut Through the Remaining Nails

Because some boards are connected to the roof from the top with nails, you must use an electric saw with a blade that has the ability to cut through nails.  Saw through all the nails along the top seam of the board. This will give you a smooth, clean surface to attach the new fascia board.

Step 4:  Measure and Cut the New Fascia Board

Next, with a tape measure, measure the length of the roof where you plan to install the new Fascia Board. With a circular saw, cut the board that is made for outside use.  Wear safety glasses.

It is important that the ends of your boards connect with each other once fastened back up on the roof.  If the fascia board replacements will wrap around the corner of the house, the only way they will fit together is if you miter the ends of the boards, or set the circular saw angle to 45 degrees.  If the replacement does not wrap around a corner, regular vertical cuts with 90 degree ends are good.

Step 5: Installation

Next, measure the distance between your roof rafters. Most are spaced 12 inches, 16 inches, or 18 inches apart.   Mark the newly cut boards where the roof rafters meet the board so that you indicate where you will hammer in the nails later.  For example, if your rafters are spaced 12 inches apart, then make a mark every 12 inches on the fascia board.

Now it is finally time for installation.  Hold the board tightly in place and secure it with 1 to 2 nails that are 2 inches long.  Ensure that each end of the board is secured into a rafter so they don’t break the seal.  It is easier to have someone hold the other end while you hammer the nails in place to make sure it is tightly in place and even.

Step 6: Bonding and Painting

To prevent water from getting in between the seams, use a bonding body filler to integrate the sections together.  Reinforce the bond by applying 2-3 coats, pushing the putty into the crack each time. Cover the nails with putty as well to complete the seal of the wood and then wait at least 24 hours for the putty to fully set.

Lastly, paint the brand new fascia board that you just installed with a color that matches your house or building.  Start by painting 1-2 coats of primer on the board and let dry for at least 6 hours before painting. Then apply a layer of protective outdoor paint to make your new fascias last.  Once completely dry, finish with a few layers of paint to match your house or building. Don’t skip congratulating yourself on your hard work.

Add Curb Appeal With Dimensional Shingles

Are you longing for a home that doesn’t look like every other house in the neighborhood? Updating your roof with dimensional shingles is a terrific way to increase your home’s curb appeal dramatically. Follow along as we explore dimensional shingles and how you can use them to make your home the star of your block.

Call Us Now!

Basics of Dimensional Shingles

Homeowners have long appreciated the benefits of asphalt shingle roofs. Along with being relatively inexpensive to install, asphalt shingles are also simple to maintain and repair. Indeed, one of the few complaints about traditional asphalt shingle roofs is that they can be pretty boring.

The fantastic news is that shingle roofs do not have to be dull. Today’s shingles come in many different colors and styles. One of the most exciting types of asphalt shingles on the market today is the dimensional shingle.

Dimensional shingles come from the bonding together of multiple layers of asphalt. The result of the bonding process is an affordable shingle that closely resembles much more expensive kinds of roofing materials. Indeed, you can achieve the look of slate, shake, and tile roofs while still having all the perks that come with a traditional asphalt roof.

It’s also possible to use the power of dimensional shingles to add visual interest without hiding the fact that the product contains multiple layers of asphalt. Imagine how you could use exciting textures and patterns to liven up your roof.

Are you ready to give dimensional shingles a closer look? If so, it’s time to look at the pros and cons of this super popular roofing material.

Dimensional Shingle Pros and Cons

There is no such thing as a material that is perfect for every roof. Still, dimensional shingles are a powerful contender as one of the best roofing choices. We love this roofing material, but we wouldn’t be honest if we didn’t cover some of the significant pros and cons so that you can make an informed decision.

The Upsides

Asphalt roofing has long been the material of choice for many homeowners across the United States. Indeed, this type of roofing material has been the most popular choice for decades. Dimensional shingles blend a favorite choice with architectural excitement and are fast becoming a popular purchase in Florida.

Affordable

Do you want the luxury look of slate while having enough money left over for your summer vacation? Dimensional shingles can beautifully mimic the look of far more expensive materials at a much more budget-friendly price. Contact us for current prices on our vast selection of dimensional shingle designs.

Options

Few materials come in as many designs and colors as the dimensional shingle. From traditional to ultra-modern, there is a shingle to fit your needs.

Waterproof

Let’s face it; the most important thing to look for in a new roof is its ability to withstand water. You can count on this type of material to keep water outside of your home. Some homeowners also opt to add a further waterproof coating to their roof for extra protection during Florida’s torrential downpours.

Fire Resistant

You might be surprised to learn that wildfires burn thousands of acres of land in Florida each year. With the increasing risk of wildfire in many communities, the roofs that cover our residential and commercial structures must resist the threat of fire. Fortunately, asphalt shingles have a Class A fire rating and can hold up under fire for as long as two hours.

The Downsides

Before you settle on installing dimensional shingles, take the time to consider the disadvantages carefully. After all, since no roofing material is without fault, you should know the potential downsides so that you can choose your new roof wisely.

Life Span

Dimensional shingles can last as many as thirty years if well-maintained. While this seems like a long time, there are other materials on the market that boast a longer lifespan. A slate tile roof, for example, often endures for over a century.

Wind

Vulnerability to the ferocious wind that accompanies hurricanes and tropical storms is one of the most severe downsides of many asphalt shingles. However, you don’t have to give up on dimensional shingles entirely. A professional roofing contractor can take steps to improve your roof’s performance in storm conditions. Read this FEMA paper on using asphalt shingles in windy areas for more detailed information.

Roof Pitch

We don’t recommend this type of roofing material for low pitched roofs. The problem with installing shingles on a roof that features a low angle is that water has a harder time rolling off the roof and can find its way into your home.

In general, dimensional shingles are a terrific option for many homeowners. The surest way to determine if they will work for your roof is to consult with a professional roofing contractor. Contact us today for a no-hassle consultation.

DIY or Professional?

One of the ways that asphalt shingles differ from many other types of roofing materials is that homeowners often see them as a simple DIY installation job. If you’re like most homeowners, the idea of saving money by taking on a roof installation job yourself is slightly tempting. After all, installing a shingle roof seems reasonably uncomplicated.

Although we won’t argue that, on the surface, installing a shingle roof doesn’t seem too tricky, however, we hope that you’ll consider hiring a professional roofer. Your roof must function correctly to protect your home from the elements. We’ve been called in to repair too many poorly done DIY jobs to say that you should attempt a roof installation.

The main thing to consider before you head over to your local big-box home improvement store for roofing supplies is that working on a roof is dangerous. Even professional roofers suffer from roofing accidents that lead to severe injuries and death. Is potentially saving money in DIY roofing worth the risk of broken bones and head trauma?

Clay Tile Roof Cleaning and What You Should Know

Does your clay tile roof look a little dreary and in need of a good roof cleaning? It’s probably time for a thorough scrubbing if it’s been a while since you cleaned the roof.

One of the downsides of homeownership is that you become responsible for maintaining your home. While some parts of home maintenance can wait until you’re ready, your roof is not one of them. Regular roof cleaning helps to make sure that your home and family are safe from the winds and rain that come with Florida’s hurricanes.

Roof Cleaning is a Must

Many benefits come when you clean your roof. Read on for some perks of roof maintenance.

Appearance

If you can see the passing of the seasons when you look at your roof, it’s time to give it some attention. The clay tiles on your roof tend to accumulate moss and stains that diminish their overall appearance. Cleaning the tiles is a terrific way to bring back their beautiful appearance.

Roof Repair

Clay tiles are very sturdy, but, like any roofing material, they can crack and break. One of the best reasons to clean your roof is that it gives you the chance to spot problems before they lead to roof failure. Trust us; repairing broken tiles is much less expensive than replacing your roof.

Performance

Florida deserves its reputation for stormy weather, and your roof must work effectively to protect your home from water leaks. Set aside time to clean all parts of your roof, including the gutters, so that your roof can function at peak performance.

Roof Replacement Cost

Replacing a tile roof is expensive. Although prices differ depending on the size and style of your home, you could easily spend over $10,000 on a new roof. No doubt, sticking to a regular roof maintenance schedule helps to keep your current roof in tip-top shape throughout its lifespan.

Roof Warranty

Many roofing material manufacturers expect you to take care of the roof. Indeed, failing to maintain the roof properly might cause the manufacturer to void your warranty. Show that you’re doing your part to protect your clay tile roof by maintaining a cleaning schedule.

Are you ready to begin cleaning? Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc. is an expert in cleaning all types of roofing systems in Florida. Read on for some straightforward roof cleaning advice.

Cleaning Clay Tile Roofs

Now that you know why cleaning your clay tile roof is vital, it’s time to talk about how to clean it. On the surface, it’s tempting to assume that cleaning the roof is no big deal. After all, power washing your roof tiles with a mixture of water and bleach will go a long way toward scrubbing off much of the algae and debris on the roof.

However, before you head to your local home improvement warehouse to rent a power washer, please consider hiring a professional roofing contractor to clean your roof. The fact is that safely working on a roof takes a level of skill that only comes from experience.

Danger

How much experience do you have climbing a ladder and walking on your roof? Chances are, climbing up onto your roof is not something that you undertake very often. Attempting to clean your roof is a dangerous thing to do, especially if you haven’t spent extensive time working on a roof.

More so than other types of roof materials, clay tiles get very slippery when they are wet. You can imagine the accidents that can occur when an inexperienced person walks on a slippery surface that is many feet above the ground. Don’t let yourself become another accident statistic.

Fragile Tiles

Clay tiles are delicate. You can crack and break them by merely walking on the roof. Unfortunately, it’s costly to replace a damaged clay tile. Professional roofers know how to maneuver on your roof in a way that keeps the clay tiles safe from harm.

Expert Eye

Did you know that issues with your roof can go unnoticed for a long time? Indeed, it’s possible for water to silently enter your home for quite sometime before the leak becomes obvious. A roofing expert knows how to spot clues of moisture sneaking underneath the clay tiles so that repairs are possible before significant damage overwhelms your home and pocketbook.

Affordable

You’ll be amazed at how wallet-friendly it is to schedule regular roof cleaning and maintenance. Our clients often indicate to us that they consider affordable professional roof maintenance a smart investment in their home. A skilled roofing professional understands how to save you money by extending the life of your roof.

Clay Tile Roofs and Storm Safety

Whether you realize it or not when you chose your roofing material, clay tiles stay strong in storms. Clay tile roofs often perform better than other types of roofs during hurricanes and tropical storms. The ability of clay tiles to repel water certainly helps to keep the interior of the house dry during severe storms.

However, while it’s undoubtedly true that clay tile roofs do a terrific job repelling water, you should have a professional examine it before the next round of storms arrives. The reason that you should have a professional roof inspection stems from the reality that many older roofs are not up to current roofing codes. As the Journal of Light Construction notes, Florida’s building codes continue to develop as researchers learn more about how buildings perform in hurricanes.

Research shows that sections of tile roofs can fly off during a powerful hurricane. The roof failure is especially likely to take place if your roof isn’t well connected to the rest of the structure. The safest way to find out if your roof is attached correctly is to ask a professional roofing contractor.

Have you ever held a clay roof tile in your hands? If so, you know that they are far from weightless. Think about what happens when a clay tile breaks away from the roof and becomes airborne during a violent storm. You can avoid having your roof tiles turn into projectiles by hiring a contractor to clean and resecure any loose tiles to your roof.

Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc. has extensive experience making sure that clay tile roofs are ready for hurricane season. Contact us today for an expert evaluation of your roof.

Waterproofing roofs begin with an inspection

Waterproofing an existing roof is typically accomplished as part of overall roof restoration. A top-flight roofing company understands that effective moisture control relies on the entire roofing system working together to repel water. Your roof restoration will include multiple steps to deliver total waterproofing.

The initial step in the waterproofing process is a thorough inspection of every aspect of the roof. The investigation begins with an examination of the roof’s structural elements. Your inspector looks for evidence of roof problems, such as sags, as well as clues that problems might be about to begin.

Tornado Roofing Company Florida Blog Resource

Condition of Materials is Important

The second phase of the inspection centers on the condition of the roofing materials. Are the shingles curling? Are there issues with the flashing? Examining the strength of the materials is an essential part of the inspection process as no waterproofing system will last for long if the underlying materials are in bad shape.

The professional roof inspector won’t forget to check the interior of your house for evidence that water has made its way inside. Make sure that the inspector can readily access the attic area to examine the underside of the roof.

Another critical component of the process involves looking for improperly designed and installed parts of the roof. You might be surprised, for instance, how often roof issues stem from the incorrect placement of the gutters.

It’s well worth it to have an experienced roof inspector examine your home once a year. Yearly appointments are a safe way to handle problems before they lead to extensive, very costly repairs.

Once the inspection takes place, you’ll receive a complete overview of the state of your roof and any recommended repairs and improvements. Don’t forget to ask any questions that you have at this stage of the restoration. Roof work is a vital investment, and you deserve to have complete confidence in your contractor.

Waterproofing and roof restoration

Repair and maintenance are critical to the roof restoration Naples homeowners need to achieve a roof that stands up well against southwest Florida’s most violent storms. Regular roof inspections make it simple to ensure the structural and performance integrity required to achieve effective waterproofing.

A well-maintained roof enjoys substantial waterproofing capabilities. Some types of roofs, however, benefit from an added layer of waterproofing. In general, you should consider applying a waterproofing sealant to your roof if it’s flat or has a low slope.

There are a variety of roof coatings on the market today. Popular options include (1) acrylic, (2) asphalt, (3) silicone, (4) emulsified asphalt, and (5) surfactant treated sealants. Not all of the sealants are appropriate for every type of roofing material. Your contractor will explain the pros and cons of each type of roof covering so you can make an informed choice.

Now you know how a roof restoration will improve the performance of your roof. Let’s turn our attention to the primary reason that you must work to waterproof your roof hurricanes.

Is Repairing Roofing Shingles A DIY Job?

Is repairing roofing shingles a reasonable DIY job? We get that question quite often from homeowners in Naples since everyone wants to save money on home repairs wherever possible. Read on to find out what we tell our clients regarding roof repairs.

Call Us Now!

DIY considerations

Do all the fixer-upper cable television shows inspire you to grab your toolbox and start working on your house? One thing that all of those shows have in common is that they sure make home renovations look easy. Still, no matter how majorly tempting it is to grab a hammer, we hope that you’ll listen to that little voice inside you that’s screaming at you to pause and think.

It’s certainly true that not all DIY projects are equal. There’s a significant difference, for instance, between painting your bedroom and repiping your whole house. Some essential questions to consider before you decide to complete a repair by yourself include:

  • Do you know how to complete the project?
  • Do you have the skills required to do a competent job?
  • Are you physically able and have the strength for the task?
  • Do you have the tools?
  • Do you have the time?
  • What are the downsides if you do subpar work?
  • What are the physical dangers?

We recommend that you spend some serious time considering these questions before you commit to a roofing repair project. Be strict with yourself regarding the time commitment and your renovation abilities. The last thing that you’ll want to have happened is to begin roof work only to realize that you can’t finish it.

Potential downsides of repairing roofing shingles

Given the above questions, does repairing roofing shingles fall into the category of a repair job that you think you can handle? We agree that, on the surface, fixing a few worn or loose roofing shingles doesn’t sound like too much of a challenge for a handy homeowner. However, let’s look at some of the reasons why you should leave roof repairs to the professionals.

Do you remember that we suggested you consider the potential downside of subpar work? Well, your roof is one area of your home that must not fall victim to shoddy repair work. Examples of the types of expensive damage that a poorly repaired roof can bring to your home include:

  • Roof leaks
  • Rotted structural wood
  • Damaged drywall
  • Mold
  • Wet, ineffective insulation
  • Increased fire risk

Indeed, ineffective roof repairs can cause significant and costly damage to your home. The money that you hoped to save by fixing a few roofing shingles yourself is nothing compared to the cost of considerable home repairs caused by a failing roof.

Roofing dangers

Along with the risk that unskilled work brings to the integrity of your roof, roofing work itself is a dangerous endeavor. Even professional roofers sometimes end up in the emergency room due to workplace accidents. Indeed, roofing is one of the top ten most dangerous professions in the United States.

Working on a roof can cause you severe injury through things like:

  • Falls from a ladder and roof
  • Tumbling through a severely damaged roof surface
  • Injuries from tools
  • Hit by falling debris
  • Electrocution by overhead power line
  • Burns from roofing tar

Is possibly saving a few dollars by repairing roofing shingles yourself worth the risk of a severe injury? Why would you take on a task when even well-trained professionals get hurt performing it?

The great news is that you can affordably hire a professional roofing company to make minor roof repairs.

Why hire a professional roofing contractor?

Why should you pull out your smartphone and call a professional roofing contractor for relatively minor repair issues? The primary reason to call in a professional roofer is that you won’t know for sure if the problem is genuinely small until an expert evaluates it. Our experienced roof inspectors can tell you countless stories about major roof problems that masquerade as quick fixes.

A homeowner misdiagnosing a roofing issue tends to lead to urgent calls to us for help down the line. The delay in diagnosing and correctly addressing the underlying problem with the roof increases the damage as well as the final cost to repair it. Don’t let your desire to save money on home repairs cause you to neglect serious roofing issues.

It’s always a smart idea to schedule an appointment with your local roofing contractor to evaluate the cause of your roof trouble. After all, maybe the shingles have experienced too much of southwest Florida’s sun and have curled with age. On the other hand, warped shingles can also be a sign of damaged underlayment.

A top-notch roofing inspector will examine every element of your roof to determine the best way to go about repairing roofing shingles on your house. Don’t worry that hiring a professional contractor necessarily translates into a costly repair bill as companies like Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc. take pride in offering the affordable roofing Naples homeowners crave.

Professional roof repairs pay off

There’s no denying that it’s smart to hire a professional roofer who can accurately diagnose the problem with your roof. We’ll go a step further and suggest that you’ll save money over the long-term when you invest in professional roof repairs.

When you opt to invest in professional roofing service, you’ll benefit from the knowledge and experience of a highly trained team. The skilled roofing team members at Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc., for instance, know the ins and outs of installing and maintaining all types of residential and commercial roofs in Naples. Knowing the tricks of working with different kinds of roofing materials is vital to the long-term performance of your roof.

In short, a professional roofer knows how to make your roofing system as waterproof as possible. While no roof will always withstand the overwhelming power of Category Five hurricane, a well-designed and maintained roof should be able to stand up to most storms. There has been a lot of study into making roofs hurricane-resistant, and you can rely on your roofing contractor to stay current with today’s roofing standards.

We can’t overstate how essential professional repairs and maintenance are for the safety of your home. Research into how hurricane-force winds and rain cause roofs to fail has been used to update building codes throughout Florida. Residential and commercial building standards include techniques designed to improve the chance that your roof will stay connected to the rest of the house during the next superstorm.

Roof Vents: A Simple Solution For A Comfortable Home

Have you ever considered how much hot air enters your home through the roof? Indeed, the oven-like environment underneath your roof makes it hard for your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable. Here’s how investing in attic roof vents is an effective way to keep your house fresh during the steamiest days in Naples, FL.

Call Us Now!

Benefits of roof vents

It’s easy to forget about your roof. After all, unless the roof is leaking or parts are blowing off the house, your roofing system performs its job in relative silence. Still, even the most undemanding part of your home benefits from proper venting.

Any roofing contractor will tell you that installing the proper attic roof vents for your house has many benefits. Some of the most significant plusses include (1) increased air circulation, (2) a dryer attic, (3) decrease in mold, (4) reduced attic temperature in hot climates and warmer attic temperatures in cold climates.

Many Florida homeowners find that an effective roof venting system results in decreased energy costs. Indeed, Energy Star notes that vents contribute to an energy-efficient home. You can achieve the best results if your home also includes attic insulation.

Along with a more environmentally friendly dwelling, roof vents also help your roof to function at a high level for years into the future. One of the biggest foes to roof longevity, for example, happens when moisture gets underneath the roofing materials. Well placed vents help to keep the area underneath the surface of your roof dry and sturdy.

Tips for How to Hire a Qualified Roofer | Best Roofing Contractor Near Me

Dangers of poorly installed roof vents

If you want the benefits that come with venting your attic, you should consult with a professional roofing contractor. For some reason, there is a concerning amount of misinformation regarding roof vent installation within the DIY community. We promise you that an incorrectly placed vent will cost you money in roof repairs and replacement.

Examples of the problems that you’ll face with incorrectly installed attic roof vents in Florida include (1) insufficient airflow, (2) moisture accumulation, and (3) dry rot and mold. These negatives often lead to an earlier than expected roof failure.

The lack of optimal airflow also lets attic temperatures soar into the triple digits. There’s no questioning that your air conditioner will need to work extra hard to cool your house if the top of the house is too hot. The results are higher energy bills and a need to replace your air conditioning system more frequently.

How do you know if you have faulty roof vents? Fortunately, you won’t need to spend much time in the attic to spot the damage. Look for things like (1) mold, (2) rust-covered fasteners, and (3) damp insulation. The presence of any of these warning signs warrants a call to a local Naples roofing contractor such as Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc.

Now that you know why it’s imperative to have a professional do your Naples residential roofing installation let’s look at what makes a top contractor.

How to find a top-notch roofing contractor

The surest way to benefit from roof vents is to hire a qualified roofing contractor. While it’s certainly true that there is no single right company, there sure are a ton of roofers that you should avoid. Read on for tips on choosing a contractor whose work will enhance the overall value of your home.

The internet makes it relatively simple to find terrific people to work on your roof. Activate your social network and ask for recommendations. Angie’s List suggests that you should always strive to hire a local contractor. A homegrown business is much more likely to respond to your needs over time.

The Better Business Bureau wrote an excellent article on locating highly-qualified roofers in Florida. Do your homework on any company that you are thinking about using.

Use the following tips.

  • Check for a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business Seal. Why would you do business with a company that doesn’t want to adhere to strict performance and ethical standards?
  • Use the Better Business Bureau website to look at reviews for a specific company.
  • Always get at least three written quotes. Here is what you should expect in a written quote. Make sure that the quotes include coverage for the same items so you can make an accurate cost comparison.
  • Does the contractor hold a current license in Florida? You can verify it here.
  • Ask for proof of insurance, including workers’ compensation for all employees.
  • Ask for a list of current references. Don’t delay calling each reference and don’t be shy about asking in-depth questions.
  • Ask if the contractor employs any sub-contractors. Unscrupulous businesses sometimes use unqualified sub-contractors to save money. Think twice about allowing sub-contractors near your roof unless you have proof that they are qualified, licensed, and insured.

A high caliber roofing contractor will do a thorough inspection of everything involving your roof before writing up a bid for the project. Expect the roof inspector to enter into your attic along with walking the entirety of the roof itself. Understanding how your attic fits with the roofing structure is so essential that you should run fast from any so-called professional who fails to examine the inside of the attic.

Roof vent maintenance

The good news is that roof vents don’t require much maintenance. That said, they do require some maintenance to function effectively. You can opt to perform the upkeep yourself or book a roof maintenance appointment with a local Naples residential roofing installation company

Keep in mind that maintenance appointments are an affordable way to remedy small problems before they have a chance to become expensive emergencies.

Typical maintenance steps include (1) clearing debris out of vents, (2) make any repairs necessary to screens and flashings, and (3) removing insulating material from vent openings. Don’t forget to check inside the attic for any repair and upkeep needs.

Avoid the potential for a catastrophic amount of water entering into your house by scheduling a roof assessment with a local roofing contractor. The roof inspectors at Tornado Roofing & Contracting Inc., for instance, know how to protect homes from the dangers of water intrusion.
